Fire Preparation And Smoke Detectors In Queensland
It takes a multi-directional safety approach to make sure that you are as prepared as possible to handle a fire in your home or property. As a tenant, we advise that you look over your responsibilities towards your smoke detectors in Queensland (read more about what the legislation requires here). Speak to your landlord openly about your fire safety and fire escape plan. If you are a landlord or homeowner, we recommend you do the same. Prepare not only a fire escape plan and emergency response kit, but make sure that your smoke detectors are in good working order – our team at Pacific Smoke Alarms is here to help!
Preparing Your Fire Escape Plan
Smoke alarms are your first line of defence, but then what? In order to optimise your chances of survival, you need to have a clear plan of action in place. It truly is a matter of life and death, and mere minutes (or less) could be the difference. Here is the advice provided by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services:
Preparation: Fire prevention is the best starting point!
Step One: Check that your smoke alarms work (see our pricing guides here)
Step Two: Create a home fire escape plan
Step Three: Practise your escape plan so that everyone is informed and prepared
In order to create your fire escape plan, you will need to do the following:
- Draw your escape plan on a sheet of paper or visit www.qfes.qld.gov.au.
- Plan two ways out of every room (if possible).
- Pick a meeting place outside the home, such as the letterbox.
- Call the fire service on 000 (Triple Zero).
- Practise your fire escape plan regularly.
- Practise your escape on your hands and knees.
- Consider how your security (e.g. locked doors and windows) may stop your escape.
Remember To Check Your Smoke Detectors!
The only smoke alarm that you should care about is a working smoke alarm. Anything less is simply unacceptable and will not provide the protection that you need. Without it, you risk loss and damage to your property, asset or business, or worse still, injury and the loss of lives.
