A Look Behind The Curtain: Safety Precautions We Adhere To When Installing Smoke Alarms In Queensland
For many of our clients, it is a relief to know that we will take care of their smoke alarms in Queensland. Naturally, the level of service and maintenance is tailored to your specific package, so you may not require a smoke alarm installation at this point, but if you have ever wondered what our Pacific Smoke Alarms technicians have that makes them so great at their job, our short answer is a deep-rooted respect for safety. This is especially true during an installation, so we have decided to share some of the safety guidelines to which we adhere.
Risk Areas And Considerations During An Installation
The key risk areas when doing a smoke alarm installation are:
- Working in roof cavities and ceiling spaces (hazards such as sharp items, vermin, insulation materials, poor lighting and even electrical conductors form part of our initial workspace assessment)
- Asbestos – if it is found that the ceiling sheeting contains asbestos, there are a number of safe work procedures we employ in order to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure through airborne particulate matter
- High heat and humidity – heat-related illnesses can be extremely dangerous and even fatal. That is why we schedule our work during optimal periods of the day and ensure that we stay hydrated
- Heights – what goes up must come down, they say, and when you are working in ceiling spaces, the risk of falls and damage due to poorly placed footing on ceiling joints or beams increases drastically. However we address this through our protocols and workspace control measures.
Health And Safety Precautions We Swear By
So what do we do to mitigate the risks as outlined above? We use a carefully constructed set of workplace safety protocols. Here is our checklist:
- Turn off electricity at the mains/switchboard before entering the workspace or starting any work
- Isolate, lockout and tag
- Do a thorough risk assessment
- Confirm that the conductive foil insulation is not energised
- Assess the ceiling sheets for the presence of asbestos (see above)
- Constantly evaluate for signs of heat stress and ensure regular hydration
- Alert and maintain contact with a nominated person while working in the ceiling space
- Adhere to height safety guidelines ensuring careful treatment of joists, beams and ceiling material
- Issue certificates (when applicable) at the end of testing
