Pool Inspections On The Gold Coast Start With Safety Fences And Gates
Swimming pools in Australia must meet specific requirements of Australian Standards, which govern the conditions of the safety barriers erected around the pool.
Pool inspections on the Gold Coast may find that you are falling short of these requirements. Read on for a simplified explanation of the requirements for pool safety fences and gates.
Minimum Specifications For Pool Fences
It is required that all pools be fenced and registered and a pool safety certificate issued. For compliance, the basic requirements for a pool fencing barrier include the following:
- The fence should be at least 1.2m high all around the pool.
- If the fence is less than 1.8m high, a clear zone of at least 900mm is required around the outside of the fence to ensure there are no climbable objects in the vicinity.
- For fences of at least 1.8m high, the non-climbable zone can be on the inside of the fence.
- No part of the fence must be climbable.
Guidelines For Pool Gates
- Gates must open outwards, away from the pool area.
- Gates must be equipped with self-closing and self-latching mechanisms.
- Gate latches must be at least 1.5m from the ground or positioned on the inside of the gate so that it would be necessary to reach over the gate to unlatch it.
- No part of the gate or gate hinges must be climbable.
Other Safety Standards And Requirements
- The pool area must not be accessible through a building, door or window. Windows opening into a pool area must have suitable safety barriers installed.
- Safety signage displaying the correct procedure for administering CPR must be displayed on the pool fence or near the pool in a highly visible position.
- Every pool needs to be registered and have a pool safety compliance certificate. Owners who do not register their pool can be fined upwards of $2000. So, to avoid this and, more importantly, to ensure the safety of your pool, it is highly recommended to call in a professional to do your pool safety inspection.
